Loving China, Loving Bulgaria – translated by Ivelina Dimitrova, with the support of the
Iztok-Zapad publishing house. The presentation will take place on 9 October, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. in the foyer of the Sevlievo Municipality.

The second edition of the Together for the Children of Bulgaria project has concluded.
The second edition of the
Together for the Children of Bulgaria project began with a water blessing ceremony and interactive activities that encouraged teamwork and personal development. The participants took part in various games, orientation tasks and mountain hikes, with each person discovering and enhancing their strengths. The culmination of the project was conquering the
Maragidik Peak and visiting elderly people in the village, to whom the participants offered help and joy. The camp ended marking the successful adventure and the positive contribution of everyone on the team and with emotional moments and promises for future meetings.

With great joy and excitement, we would like to invite you to the Award Ceremony for the Distinguished Participants in the 2
nd Petko Hinov Translation Competition.
The Petko Hinov Translation Competition is being organised for the second time with the joint efforts of the Confucius Institutes at Veliko Tarnovo University and Sofia University, the Department of Classical and Eastern Languages and Cultures at
St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo and the Department of Chinese Studies at
St. Kliment Ohridski Sofia University in collaboration with the
Petko Hinov Foundation.
The ceremony will take place on
9 February, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in room 108 of the Confucius Institute at
St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo.
Let us share this special moment and celebrate the achievements of the young translators.
Petko himself was a translator of the highest class. He was the recipient of the Special Annual Award of the Bulgarian Translators’ Union for exceptional achievements in the field of translation, for his translations from Classical Chinese of the books
Thirty-Six Stratagems and
Fireside Talk at Night (2014), the
Hristo G. Danov National Award of the Ministry of Culture for his translation of
A Dream of Red Mansions, Volume 1, by Cao Xueqin (2015), and the Special Contribution Award for Chinese Literature (2017).
Let us recall Petko’s thoughts on the art of translation:
"When, however, we translate from an ancient to a contemporary language — even within the confines of the same historical language — we resemble divers plunging into depths, where we cannot take with us the torch of modern reason. To understand the words of the ancients, we need to have their thoughts, their feelings, their worldview and even their way of life. Translators depict things that they have not seen in their own lives, and for this reason, their labour is broader in scope than that of a writer, who draws from the storerooms of their own experience and imagination. A translator's labour is far more arduous than that of a writer, which is why history has given us many astonishing young writers but very few astonishing young translators." —

Translation Competition
FROM CHINESE TO BULGARIAN AND VICE VERSA
In the Name of Petko Hinov –
Translator, publicist, poet, editor, teacher, public figure, admirer of fine literature, author of liturgical poetry and hymns in Church Slavonic, and researcher of Bulgarian linguistic roots.
"If within you lies even the smallest spark of that magical restlessness for sharing and devotion, this may well be the first spark ready to flow across the arc of your love for both China and Bulgaria. Because translators have at least two homelands, and only true translators possess an unshakable love for both." –

- The competition is open to translators from Chinese to Bulgarian and/or Bulgarian to Chinese, as well as to anyone studying or interested in Chinese language and culture.
- Participants will have the opportunity to choose works selected by the jury for translation in the following three categories:
- Contemporary Chinese poetry – from Chinese to Bulgarian.
- Contemporary Chinese prose – from Chinese to Bulgarian.
- Translation of Petko Hinov works– from Bulgarian to Chinese (choose from the following):
- The poem Old Photographs
- The short story Return to Gela
- Submission deadline: 2 February, 2025
